Friday October 19th is not a school day for K-12 students, but Boynton Beach High School will be filled with “learners” as participants of the 8th Annual Language and Culture Conference converge on the Boynton Beach school. Drawn by two (inter)nationally known key note speakers and the choice of over 80 breakout sessions, the pre-registrations include teachers, guidance counselors, principals and other educators, as well as members of the community who work with K-12 students through their organizations or agencies.
Climbing to New Heights, the theme selected this year by organizers in the Department of Multicultural Education, reflects the intent of the conference for educators and other professionals who seek to grow and enhance their skills, and ultimately—improved academic outcomes for students. Dr. Bill McBride, known for his humorous, interactive approach, will speak on innovative teaching methodologies in his keynote Friday. Saturday’s keynote speaker, Dr. Kenji Hakuta will address the challenges involved and some suggested best practices in helping English language learners master the new Common Core Standards. Both educators are also published authors known for their commitment to students and teachers.
Department Director Dr. Margarita Pinkos said attendance for the conference grows each year. “This year, we have a few schools that are bringing everyone on their staff,” she stated. “Our educators recognize that effective strategies for our culturally and linguistically diverse students are often simply good teaching strategies for all students.” The District currently has students who represent 197 countries and territories including the United States, with 149 languages including English spoken by various students and their families.
Friday’s breakfast and Saturday’s lunch are being prepared by Boynton Beach High School’s Culinary Magnet Program students. Gourmet food trucks will be on hand for lunch offerings on Friday. Added features of the conference include the announcement of the Hispanic Heritage Contest winners, and performances by students from different schools. As always, a variety of door prizes will be awarded and participants will receive classroom resources from each breakout presenter.
Friday’s session runs from 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Saturday the conference runs from 8:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m.
